Ever noticed the hidden beauty in architecture?
I’ve been thinking a lot about architecture lately.
Hey,
Welcome to the first edition of The Athenaeum! I’m thrilled to have you here as part of this community. Every wednesday, I’ll be sharing thoughts and insights on three topics that I find endlessly fascinating: beauty, philosophy, and business.
This week, we're diving into the concept of beauty in architecture.
Finding Beauty in Architecture
I’ve been thinking a lot about architecture lately. It's one of those topics that feels distant but is actually quite close to us all the time. Every day, you walk by buildings, sit in rooms, and move through spaces shaped by someone else's vision. And there's something truly profound in recognizing the beauty in these creations
"We shape our buildings; thereafter, they shape us."
It's a simple idea, but a powerful one.
When we design a building, we're making decisions about how people will live and work. Will there be open spaces that encourage collaboration? Will there be private areas for focus and quiet? These choices matter because they affect how we feel and act every day.
Think about a typical office. If it's full of small, cramped cubicles, people might feel isolated and uninspired.

But if it's open and airy, with lots of natural light, people are likely to feel more energized and connected. The design of the space influences our mood and productivity.

It's not just about offices. Our homes, schools, and public spaces all shape our experiences. A well-designed school can inspire learning and creativity. A thoughtful public park can bring a community together.

But it's a two-way street. As we live and work in these spaces, we start to adapt to them. Our habits and routines are shaped by the buildings we're in. Over time, the way we think and interact can change because of the environments we inhabit.
Churchill's point is that we have a responsibility when we design and build. We're not just creating structures; we're shaping the future. And once those buildings are in place, they start shaping us in return.
Architects don't just design buildings; they craft experiences. They take raw materials and turn them into structures that not only serve a function but also tell a story. You see, beauty in architecture isn't just about how a building looks. It's about how it makes you feel.
Think of the last time you walked into a space and felt a sense of awe. Maybe it was a cathedral with soaring ceilings, or perhaps a sleek, modern office building. That feeling is no accident. It’s the result of countless decisions made by someone who cared about creating something beautiful.

What makes architecture beautiful? It's a mix of many things. Proportion and symmetry play a big role. There’s a reason why classical buildings with their balanced columns and arches are still admired today. But beauty can also be found in asymmetry, in the unexpected, in the way light interacts with surfaces, or in the way a building harmonizes with its surroundings.

There's also a certain honesty in beautiful architecture. The best buildings are those that don't try to hide what they are. They embrace their materials and let their structure be part of their aesthetic. Think of the exposed steel beams in a modern skyscraper or the rustic charm of a wooden cabin. These elements aren’t just decoration; they’re integral to the building's identity.
But perhaps the most important aspect of beauty in architecture is its impact on you. A beautiful building can inspire you, calm you, or even challenge you. It can make a routine walk to work feel special or turn a simple home into a sanctuary.
So next time you’re out and about, take a moment to really look at the buildings around you. Notice the details, the shapes, the way the light hits them. Appreciate the thought and effort that went into making something both functional and beautiful. You might find that it changes the way you experience your everyday environment.
That's it, thanks for reading!
